Rugby league’s biggest awards night was good news for Melbourne Storm. But Sydney’s James Tedesco snatched the coveted Dally M medal for best player.
Lawrence Jeffcoat reports.
As usual the partners stole the show at the Dally M awards last night.
The glitz and glamour helps make the event.
But for passionate league fans the focus is on the best player and that turned out to be the Rooster’s James Tedesco.
James Tedesco, Roosters Fullback: “I actually thought he was going to win but everyone kept telling me I was going to win, so I’m glad it’s all done now so I can focus on Sunday.”
Tedesco just pipped the Storm’s Cameron Smith by three points.
But Smith won the captain of the year award and Craig Bellamy was coach of the year for the fifth time.
Smith wasn’t there for his award and his coach isn’t even sure the team’s best player will be back next season.
Craig Bellamy, Melbourne Coach: “I suppose, two or three weeks ago I was pretty confident he’d play again next year, it’s sort of up in the air to be honest.”
Meanwhile, Dragons player Jess Sergis took out the women’s Dally M.
