Local police were patrolling the Ipswich area around 5am this morning, and saw a Volvo sedan that had been reported stolen.

They didn’t pursue.

But an officer from another vehicle deployed a road stinger to stop the car in its tracks.

Mel Adams, Queensland Police: “During that deployment a police officer has been struck by the vehicle and sustained significant injuries.”

He was rushed to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital with head trauma and remains in a critical condition.

The incident has shocked his colleagues just one day before National Police Remembrance day.

Mel Adams, Queensland Police: “We are a very close-knit policing district, we look after ourselves and our thoughts are with this officer and his family. We ask people to say a prayer for him.”

Brisbane Road and Hamilton Street in Booval were closed while police scientific officers examined the scene.

Officers later arrested two young people they allege were involved in the accident.
