Surface Paradise is already being transformed for the big weekend, when the city’s streets become a race track.
But this morning… V8 legends… Mark Skaife, Russell Ingall… Steven Richards and Tony Longhurst got together and into race mode.
Steven Richards, V8 Supercar Driver: “All of the drivers love getting up here, the crowd is fantastic, the atmosphere is always electric and the race around the streets of surfers paradise is great fun”
But for the drivers the weekend is not all fun and games.
Mark Skaife – Bathurst 1000 Winner: “It’s a very difficult race track to get right. It’s got a lot of very fast sections for a street circut and no room for error. The slightest little mistake and your in the fence.”
And for spectators it’s a party both on and off the track.
Andrew Behne, QUT News: “Each year the event grows in popularity. Last year one hundred and ninety seven thousand spectators attended and more than two hundred thousand are expected to file through the gates on the weekend.”
Even the old legends are getting a piece of the action.
Russell Ingall, V8 Supercar Driver: “I mean your driving some of the best cars you’ll ever drive on unbelievable circuits, why would you give it up? Just keep doing it.”
The race action kicks off on Friday with off track entertainment every night.
