Police say the single-storey house was well alight when emergency services arrived around 6pm.

Firefighters found the body of a two-year-old boy in his bed.

Four other children aged between seven and 15, escaped with minor injuries.

It’s believed the five, four siblings and a relative, were home alone at the time.

Police haven’t confirmed that the eldest was cooking with oil when fire broke out on the stove.

Neighbours heard the children screaming for help, but there was nothing they could do.

Terrance Mann, Neighbour: “The girl come out saying her nephew was still inside, and as I went to break through the window to see if I could try rescue him, I just thought nah, like ’cause the smoke was too big.”

Detectives and fire investigators were back at the scene this morning.

While the blaze isn’t being treated as suspicious, police are investigating how long the children were left unsupervised.
