A three-year-old boy is fighting for his life and a four-year-old girl is also in hospital after being hit by a train at Wallace in country Victoria yesterday.
The pair wandered onto the railroad tracks while playing in an adjacent backyard.
Snr Sgt Neale Robinson, Victorian Police: “The mother was in the backyard it appears and she’s taken her eyes off them for a second and they’ve run out of her sight.”
The boy suffered critical head, chest and abdominal injuries when struck by the passenger train, which travels up to speeds of 130 kilometres per hour.
The girl also suffered head injuries as well as cuts and bruises. Doctors say her condition is stable.
The pair were rushed to Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital where the boy remains in an induced coma.
