Emergency services were called to the home in Kelso at about three o’clock this morning to find the house fully ablaze.

A woman and her six children were asleep inside when the fire broke out.

The woman and five of her children aged between seven weeks and 15 years managed to escape the fire but she was unable to reach her 4-year-old son.

Police officers at the scene tried to enter the house but were stopped by fire and smoke.

Firefighters found the boy in a rear bedroom.

Insp Gary Williams, NSW First Brigade: “And the crew found the young child and handed him to the ambulance for treatment and transport.”

He was rushed to Bathurst Base Hospital in a critical condition but died a few hours later.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
