In Melbourne, heavy black smoke covered the sky after a factory was damaged by fire.

The owner and a friend were asleep inside.

They made a lucky escape and were only treated for smoke inhalation.

Over 50 firefighters battled to get the inferno under control.

Don Wilkie, CFA: “At the front of the building there’s a lot of carpet and vinyl, at this point we’re not sure but possibly that’s where the fire’s ignited from.”

Residents in surrounding suburbs have received health warnings as thick smoke billows for kilometres.
